| Where do we fly? We launch off of Slide Mountain by Mt. Rose Ski Resort How long is the flight? Flight time can last 30 minutes to an hour Can I get pictures of my flight? Yes, we can take pictures or attach a camcorder to the glider. This captures you, the glider, and the view (* Due to camera maintenance and other issues, the camera is not always available, and photos are never guaranteed. Ask your instructor about the camera or camcorder, the day before your flight.)What should I wear? Be sure to wear rubber-soled shoes, such as tennis shoes, hiking shoes or running shoes. No sandals or high heels, please. Also, we suggest bringing layers, as it can be hard to predict if it will be hot or cold. Can a person with no experience fly on the first day?
How is a hang glider controlled? The pilot is suspended in a harness from the glider at its center of gravity. Move your body back and the glider climbs. Move forward and it descends. Shift your weight to the side and the glider banks and turns. What does it feel like to fly? You can feel a combination of adrenalin rush and a sense of freedom while flying. Hang gliding is a three-dimensional sport which gives it an extra kick. Like wind-surfing or skiing, there is a rewarding sense of focus, excitement and control. Do you need wind to fly? It is the motion of the glider moving through the air that supports you, not the wind. Pilots with the proper skills take advantage of wind or thermals (upward rising air) to turn a gliding flight into a soaring flight that can last for hours. What if I'm afraid of heights? A remarkable number of advanced pilots say they are afraid of heights! Thanks to careful, progressive steps when learning to fly, and the security of a good glider and harness, pilots take to the air without any of that feeling you get on the edge! Do pilots need to be of a certain age, gender, weight or size range? Hang glider pilots range in age from teens to retirees. If you have the desire to fly, we can make it happen! How does a student go about learning to fly? The USHGA certifies hang gliding instructors and schools. All students should learn from a certified instructor. Typically, a student will spend 5 - 10 lessons to obtain each of the first two USHGA pilot ratings (Beginner and Novice). |
